January Miscellany Blog No. 2

It's a first world problem, and I feel dumb complaining about it, but coming back to reality from the dreamland of Patagonia was tough. Transitioning from a life without chores or obligations to a fast paced urban assault has made for quite the tumultuous time. I keep saying this to my friends and family, but I have been extremely discombobulated since I stepped off the plane last week and have been struggling to get back into my normal routine. I suppose writing and sharing photos has been a cathartic step in this process.

Part of what's responsible for my discombobulation is the newest addition to our family. Toph Beifong-McKan is an 8 month old blind kitten. The rescue that we adopted her from isn't sure of her exact story; we just know that she was found on a construction site. She had partial vision in one of her eyes, but both needed to be removed about a month ago due to some unknown complications. However despite all this, she's adapting pretty well to her new home and is remarkably brave for someone without eyesight.

For those wondering about her name - she is named after Toph, a blind earth bender from Caitlin and I's favorite cartoon, Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Often we are reminded of her vision impairment. Toph figuring out the flight patterns of the nigiri toy.

Sometimes she figures it out, sometimes it's a swing and a miss.

The patches on her nose are remnants of ringworm she contracted while recuperating at the rescue.

Working out my bounce flash technique here.

I like the story that this photo tells. Left to right we have the photographer, the subject's reflection in the mirror, and the subject itself. My flash is pointed at the ceiling with the diffusing cover on. FEC set at 0, ISO 200, f2.8, 1/160, and 32mm.

We suspect Toph uses her whiskers to sense objects in close proximity.

An obligatory Nosy.

Experimenting with a filmic emulation preset I made based on a youtube tutorial. I am trying to tone down the intensity of the preset here as it often comes off fairly strong and saturated. Something about the opposing blue and orange colors combined with the glow of the courthouse stone is pleasing to my eye.

More flash experimentation. For this photo, my flash was out of sync with the shutter so I had to brighten this a lot in post. Too bad I didn't get the flash, this would've been a sweet shot.

Ok, the flash did fire here. But I wish Stinky was fully airborne.

More downtown explorations. I'm running out of angles to shoot just walking the street, but I like the boxy shapes and sharp edges against the blue sky.

This apartment building caught my eye. I'm drawn to the geometric shapes as well as the water staining on the concrete on the left side of the background. The shadows thrown by the solar panels also look pretty neat.

Cool statues just down the road from me. I was driving by just as light was fading out and thought this would be a neat experiment. Not an amazing angle, but the clean shapes against a sharp background really speak to me.
